Red Cross Notice

Prisoner of War Confirmation

June 23, 1944

Telegram confirming Richard F. Hanson is a Prisoner of War

Nearly two months after the Missing in Action telegram, this message finally brought news the family had been desperately hoping for: Richard was alive.

The International Red Cross had confirmed that Richard was being held as a prisoner of war by German forces. While the family now faced the uncertainty of his captivity, they at least knew he had survived being shot down.

Richard would spend the next eleven months as a prisoner at Stalag Luft IV in Poland before being liberated in May 1945.
